Bayer CropScience recently gave a $5,000 grant to Bay Port High School in Green Bay, Wisconsin, through the company’s Thankful4Ag initiative, which provided 200,000 meals to needy families over the holidays.
The grant money will be used to purchase up to three new hydroponic systems to grow produce without soil, along with the necessary lighting accessories and nutrients.
“We are thrilled to receive this award,” Michael Frieder, principal at Bay Port High School, said. “Coming from Wisconsin, we know how hard our nation’s farmers work to provide food for our country and the world.”
The school was entered to win the grant, and Bayer helped provide 10 meals to Feeding America, which co-sponsored the initiative, each time a student or teacher created and shared a digital meal using #T4AgGrant and #Thankful4Ag on the www.Thankful4Ag.com website. The school’s chances to win and the number of meals donated were increased by the number of students who tweeted or posted.
Thanks to participation from Bay Port senior Julia Stanzel, the school was randomly selected out of nearly 300 teachers and students nationwide who shared a meal during the initiative.
“Bay Port High School is a deserving recipient of the $5,000 Thankful4Ag grant because of its demonstrated commitment to helping the nation’s hungry and celebration of the vital role that agriculture plays in our society,’ Beth Roden, head of communications for Bayer CropScience, said.
