MASSACHUSETTS FARM BUREAU FEDERATION: County Farm Bureaus Discuss Concerns With Legislators Over Breakfasts

Massachusetts Farm Bureau Federation issued the following announcement on March 11.

County Farm Bureaus in Massachusetts are continuing a long-standing tradition this month, where they host breakfasts for legislators and their farmer members to meet and discuss issues important to agriculture in the Commonwealth. These legislative breakfasts are an important platform for farmers to advocate for bills that they want to see progress in the coming legislative session.

“As directed by our grassroots membership base, Massachusetts Farm Bureau Federation is focusing discussions at these breakfasts this year around livestock care, changes to chapter 61A, hemp, local Boards of Health regulation and renewal energy facilities on agricultural land,” said MFBF President Mark Amato. “While MFBF leadership will speak on these topics during the breakfasts, our members will also have the opportunity to establish personal relationships that can be very helpful as we try to move our priorities through the legislature.”

These legislative breakfasts lead up to an event called Agricultural Day at the Statehouse, which this year is set to be help on March 27. This event is marked with a speaking program and a closed reception, during which legislators can talk one-on-one with farmers. The food for the reception is all locally-sourced and is prepared by Assabet Valley Technical High School.

“Ag Day is a truly unique event, where we see all kinds of farmers band together and become advocates for the industry,” Amato said. “This day keeps agriculture in the forefront of legislators’ minds and brands Massachusetts agriculture as collaborative, engaged and an important piece of the Commonwealth’s economy.”
