The U.S. Grains Council (USGC)’s 2015/2016 Sorghum Harvest and Export Quality Report says the overall quality of U.S. 2015 sorghum crop is very good.
During preparation for shipment, 98 percent of the sorghum graded at a number 2 or better. The report follows the sorghum from the end of harvest through export facilities.
“During the last marketing year, the United States was the top exporter of sorghum, accounting for 75 percent of sales,” USGC Chairman Alan Tiemann said. “Our new report indicates that sorghum being shipped overseas from this year’s crop should be of the high quality that our customers demand, which is excellent for the buyer and the farmer.”
When the sorghum entered marketing channels, samples showed it had some of the same key characteristics. The bushels averaged 58.9 pounds per bushel and there were low levels of broken kernels and foreign material. The crop also showed very low levels of total damage, no heat damage and average moisture was at 14.1 percent, which is considered near optimum.
“The Sorghum Early Harvest Report that we released earlier this year was well received by our customers overseas, and we are hoping for similar results with this second report that completes the picture of the new U.S. sorghum crop,” Tiemann said.
