Farmers from 10 Alabama counties had the opportunity to meet with Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) in Jacksonville on Feb. 17 with the main topics consisting of federal regulations and low commodity prices.

The concern comes from the secretary of agriculture’s decision not to use authority to designate cottonseed as an oil seed with concern for the Farm Bill programs.

“I appreciate Congressman Rogers’ work on the House Agriculture Committee,” Calhoun County Farmers Federation President Wendell Wilson said. “It’s vital that we communicate openly with him about farm programs, laws and regulations that impact so much of agriculture. He does a great job of making himself available to his constituents and representing our conservative values in Washington. I feel like he makes sure we’re not overrun with liberal interpretations of federal regulations that can affect so much of what we do.”

For his part, Rogers expressed the importance of meeting the farmers.

“I always appreciate that 3rd District farmers are willing to take time to meet with me and discuss the challenges they’re facing,” Rogers said. “It’s crucial for me to hear from them about agricultural issues at home. Whether its farm bill implementation or the burdensome regulations the EPA continues to impose on these folks, I will continue to fight for our farmers.”
