EPA OKs flood irrigation following herbicide's use

The application of Alion herbicide is easier in California with the Environmental Protection Agency's easing of restrictions on flood irrigation.

Places that grow stone fruit, pome fruit, grapes, tree nuts and olives may be flood irrigated 60 days after the application of Alion, which controls grasses and broadleaf weeds up to six months.

“The label change is particularly important in California, where tree and vine growers have been struggling with widespread glyphosate- and ALS-resistant weeds,” Bayer Product Manager Nevada Smith said. “The residual activity of Alion and its alternative mode of action have established Alion as a foundational element in the herbicide arsenal.”

Alion is a cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor (CBI) – WSSA Group 20 – which means it reduces the need for residual tankmix partners. There are no documented cases of resistance to CBI in the United States.
