Farm Bureau members at the 97th Annual American Farm Bureau Convention voted to approve cotton as an oilseed.

This means cotton in farm bill safety net programs, Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage would be considered as an oilseed. The members formed a grassroots campaign specifically for this policy because farmers were under such financial stress as a result of current cotton prices and knew they needed some form of government assistance.

Farm Bureau members will continue to stand against what most consider to be government overregulation like the Environmental Protection Agency’s Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule. The Farm Bureau claims the EPA is taking an advocacy position with WOTUS, which is against their mandate as a federal agency.
