A new book, Compendium of Soybean Diseases and Pests, Fifth Edition, is a tool soybean farmers can use to help their crops be more profitable and less prone to the diseases, insects, pests and disorders that often plague them.
The fifth edition includes a wider range of pests and other stresses than the four previous editions. The book includes in-depth solutions for diseases and pests caused by biotic factors -- such as prokaryotes, fungi and oomycetes, nematodes, viruses, and seed and postharvest pathology; major insect pests, such as soybean aphids, bean leaf beetles, caterpillars, and kudzu bugs; disorders caused by abiotic factors, including weather-related stresses, mineral deficiencies, toxicities; and injuries from chemicals and pollutants as well as strategies for disease management, including biological enhancements, cultural practices, host-plant resistance, and pesticide use.
Scientists and farmers alike can use this book to identify pests and pathogens, and it is the authority for soybean researchers and growers. It includes 240 images and a comprehensive glossary and index.
It sells for $119 from American Phytopathological Society, which publishes the book.
