New Phytobac biobed system unveiled

The United Kingdom's first Phytobac was unveiled in March at Russell Smith Farms during an event with Linking the Environment and Farming.

The Phytobac system is a biobed used for the breakdown of pesticide from sprayers. The "closed" system ensures that no waste products are released from the system. It uses a completely natural breakdown process, much like what happens naturally in soil, to break the waste products into basic elements or simple compounds within the Phytobac. Products are broken down into elements or compounds such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water.

Growers are increasingly using more natural Best Management Products when it comes to product breakdown in soils. A gram of soil contains between 10,000 and 100,000 fungi, 10 million to 1 billion bacteria, and more than 1,000 different species that naturally breakdown products that land on or go into soil.
