SUs are used to control broadleaf and grassy weeds. They are a widely used class of agricultural pesticides and registered for both agricultural and non-agricultural uses.
The EPA grouped the 22 ecological risk assessments, which focuses on the risks to plants, into one document. The risks are minimal and concentrated on plants that are not the target of the pesticide. The single document idea was to increase efficiency and consistency for public comment on a group of similar compounds at the same time.
The single document was separated for the human health risk assessment because of the differences in toxicity endpoints.
Thirteen additional pesticide chemicals which are not SUs are also available for human review and ecological risk assessments.
The Federal Register notice announced the availability of public comments through Nov. 24. Registration review is EPA's periodic review of pesticide registrations to ensure that each pesticide continues to satisfy the statutory standard for registration so that the pesticide can perform its intended function without unreasonable adverse effects on human health or the environment.
The EPA, through these assessments, can ensure that each pesticide is based on current scientific knowledge of its potential effects on human health.
