Bayer CropScience holds horticulture symposium in Mexico

Bayer CropScience hosted a Horticultural Symposium Sept. 30 to Oct. 1 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to address sustainability and innovation in modern horticulture.

The symposium allows over 175 industry professionals to network, share knowledge and exchange best practices. Experts from around the world also delivered lectures and participated in panel discussions on such topics as ‘Trends in fresh fruit and vegetable consumption’ and discussions on location specific crop topics.

“Enhancing nutrition through healthy fruits and vegetables is one of our company’s key commitments, underlined by long-term investments into innovation in support of sustainable horticulture production,” said Mathias Kremer, head of strategy and portfolio management and member of the executive committee at Bayer CropScience.

In its Food Chain Partnership projects, Bayer CropScience brings together growers, processors, exporters and importers and retailers. The symposium connected growers with the food value chain which allows growers to extended market access, guarantees traders consistent quality and pricing as well as a wide variety of affordably priced produce.

“The Food Chain Partnership allows us to collaborate with partners in ways that are truly sustainable," Kremer said. "It is an excellent example of how we put our core principles into practice.” 

Horticulture crops are growing in popularity: there are currently more than 200 different kinds. In 2013, it was estimated that, of 2.7 billion tons of vegetables and fruits, two thirds were vegetables and one third were fruit crops.
