Syngenta gets OK to market latest resistance-management herbicide

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently approved Syngenta's newest resistance-management herbicide, Broadworks.

Broadworks, which contains the active ingredient mesotrione, is the first 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor approved by the EPA for use on tree nuts, stone fruit and citrus. It aids in herbicide resistance management by controlling weeds such as marestail and fleabane that are resistant to other herbicides such as glyphosate.

Syngenta Product Lead John Foresman said Broadworks will bring a new mode of action to the table for fruit growers concerned about managing glyphosate-resistant broadleaf weeds.

"Broadworks will provide growers a much-needed new tool for handling an increasingly challenging weed-management landscape,” Foresman said.

Because of its single active ingredient, Broadworks can be combined with other tank-mix products to create a full-season weed control program.
