BASF introduces new product labeling to thwart counterfeiting in China

BASF SE announced Monday that it is introducing a new crop protection labeling system to cut product counterfeiting in China.

The new label, developed with a Chinese company, uses a special water mark that can only be seen in sunlight. A unique color pigment also makes it even easier for customers to identify genuine BASF products.

"Our new technology quickly proves the authenticity of BASF products and points out with clarity products that are counterfeited,” BASF Crop Protection Director of Business Management in Greater China, Tracy Wu, said. "We are committed to providing farmers with effective, innovative products that allow them to work in a safe environment and produce safe food, feed and fiber."

BASF began using the technology last month in several of its fungicides and plans to expand it to other products.

The company is fighting counterfeiting in other markets, as well. In Brazil, it has invested in a custom device that ensures product authenticity.
