Bayer CropScience announced new options to combat weeds on Thursday, designed for producers of maize crops, as the sowing period is set to begin shortly.

MaisTer WG is a compound that entered the market last year and has proven to be effective, according to Technical Adviser of Agril's Western Region John Vickery. He states that it can also be mixed with other compounds such as Buctril and Mero in order to provide a broad range of protection.

“Maize is not the most competitive crop, so weed control is essential for getting a good yield,” Bayer CropScience's Tim Holt said.

Vickery states that an ideal mix of products would be MaisTer WG and a residual partner, such as Callisto, especially if black-nightshade is likely to impact maize crops this year.

Bayer claims that their product would be effective in the case of a heavy infestation as a pre-emergency product that would prevent a large grouping of weeds to be able to take hold in crop fields.

“The lower rate of MaisTer WG with either Callisto or Buctril is likely to be sufficient for the weed spectrum on many farms,” Vickery said. “I expect that we’ll use the 150g rate on farms with severe weed populations, for example land with maize as a break-crop to deal with black-grass. Any farmer growing maize for livestock is probably trying to make every penny count; if they do want a one-hit product, then MaisTer WG with a tank-mix partner is probably the best on the market."
