The Spring Market Basket Survey, an informal survey conducted by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), found food prices among 16 common foods were down 1 percent from last year.
The total for the 16 common foods was $53.28 and were "relatively well-balanced" compared to 2015, said Veronica Nigh, an AFBF economist.
Ten of the 16 foods surveyed decreased in price and six, including apples and eggs, increased in average price. America’s farmers and ranchers were able to grow quality produce for people at an affordable price. The survey reflected a successful year of growing and pricing produce.
“Of those products apples increased the most, and that’s really a reaction to last year’s significantly lower prices because of some port disruptions,” Nigh said. “On the egg side, the industry is still readjusting from the High Path Avian Influenza that devastated egg lays across the United States last fall.”
