Canada to lead alliance for canola production research

Canada and three organizations recently entered an alliance for research in canola production, according to Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay.

“Continued innovation in agronomic practices is a cornerstone to our industry’s Keep it Coming strategic plan,” Patti Miller, president of the Canola Council of Canada, said. “This research investment plays a key role in determining best management practices that will help us achieve our shared vision of a 52 bushel per acre average yield by 2025.”

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Agri-Science Project (ASP) under Growing Forward 2 are making the investment for the project along with $980,000 in federal funding. Other groups are contributing as well for a total of $1.9 million over five years.

The ASP’s goal is to bring together areas identified as places where canola research would benefit. The ASP is called “In Pursuit of 52 by 2025” identifying the goal of accomplishing their mission within the next nine years.

The projects funded include an identification of genetic mapping of canola to develop products for resistance.
