Mississippi Insect Control Guide will be available next month

The 2016 Insect Control Guide for Agronomic Crops is available online and hard copies will be available starting in January.

There are several changes in this year’s guide. It no longer includes pyrethroid insecticides for bollworm control because of a recent, substantial uptick in resistance and poor control. This change should not come as a surprise to Mississippi farmers, because it has been a verbal recommendation for a while before becoming official in writing in this guide.

Secondly, the guide has added a dynamic threshold for bollworm in soybeans. The thresholds account for commodity costs and price of treatment for bollworms in reproductive stage soybeans. These thresholds have been developed after a multi-state project.

In addition to soybeans, the 104-page control guide includes insect management sections for cotton, corn, grain sorghum, wheat, sweet potatoes, rice, peanuts and pasture. It also includes insecticide performance ratings for cotton, soybean, corn, grain sorghum, small grains and rice crops.
