The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has created a proposal in response to a court-ordered deadline.
Litigation by activists has frustrated Crop Life America because it has been proved to be beneficial to farmers while also being safe for use on crops.
The EPA has revoked the food residue tolerances for chlorpyrifos. The EPA asked for a deadline to make a revocation decision by April 15, 2016, but the 9th Circuit Court denied this request and required the EPA to respond by Oct. 31 before a drinking water risk assessment was completed.
“It is unfortunate that court-mandated deadlines helped result in the agency’s proposal to revoke food residue tolerances for a beneficial and wide-reaching crop protection product,” CropLife America's President and CEO
Jay Vroom
said. “Unnecessary litigation-driven deadlines risk arbitrarily taking away valuable tools from all farmers, and this is just such a scenario. This is a drastic and unnecessary step that is caused by wasteful, agenda-driven litigation. We are confident that due legal and scientific process will make this proposed action unnecessary.”
There have been thousands of scientific studies that have said chlorpyrifos is safe to use and, as such, is an invaluable tool for farmers for many crops.
