Syngenta offers tips stop soybean cyst nematodes

Syngenta said Wednesday it is encouraging soybean growers to develop a proactive plan to protect their yields from soybean cyst nematode (SCN) as they prepare for the 2016 growing season.

SCN is a microscopic parasite that does a large amount of damage to soybean crops, destroying 30 percent of soybean yield in the United States each year.

SCN is the leading source of soybean yield loss because SCN stresses the plant and causes them to be more susceptible to other diseases.

“Because SCN is hidden under the soil, growers don’t realize the extent of their problem until they soil sample and/or begin to notice lower yields,” Syngenta Seedcare Technical Product Lead Dale Ireland said. “Direct feeding, infection and stress caused by SCN allow additional diseases and yield losses to occur.”

Syngenta advises farmers to rotate crops, plant SCN-resistant varieties, use a seed-applied nematicide and sample soil after every second soybean crop. Additionally, farmers can treat seeds with Clariva Complete Beans seed treatment, which has a combination of a nematicide, an insecticide and three fungicides. To prevent sudden death syndrome (SDS), growers can add Mertect 340-F to Clariva Complete Beans.

“There are several options in the tool box to manage SCN,” Ireland said. “You need to utilize all the tools available. A proactive SCN management program is required to protect your soybeans from increased losses and improve your return on investment.”
